Today's James Naughtie spoke to Dr Clayborn Carson, the editor of Martin Luther King's papers at Stanford University, and to Sheyann Webb-Christburg co-author of the book 'Selma, Lord, Selma'.

Sheyann Webb-Christburg who took part in the Selma marches and first met Dr King when she was 8 years old, said of the marches 'you never knew what was going to happen'.

Dr Carson, who praised the 'great victory', highlighted that 'the struggle is not over'.

Next month will mark 50 years since the marches from Selma to Montgomery which culminated in the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. The film, Selma, was released on Friday.
