Explorer Mark Plotkin says his team found 鈥渁 cache of archaeological treasures鈥� in modern-day Honduras that could be the White City of the Monkey God 鈥� a long-lost Central American civilisation.

The ethnobotanist said the 鈥渦ntouched, unbroken鈥� artefacts reminded him of 鈥渨alking into Pompei鈥�, though he concedes they 鈥渄idn鈥檛 find the monkey -- or the God".

鈥淭his stuff was clearly different from the Mayan culture to the north, or the Incan culture to the south.鈥�

He also says he plans to keep the site secret.

鈥淚ts remoteness has kept it isolated and protected for 500 years. We're clever enough not to publicise exactly where it is.鈥�
