We introduce algebra, giving a translation of the word from the Arabic phrase for 鈥渞eunion of broken parts鈥�. We introduce equations and see an equation of the kind that students will have see, where an icon stands for an unknown. We replace the icon with 鈥渪鈥� and demonstrate solving simple equations by using inverse operations. We also see examples of simplifying an expression by collecting like terms.
