Sunburn is to skin cancer what smoking is to lung cancer says a leading dermatologist.

Dr Walayat Hussain, from Nuffield Health at Leeds Hospital, said: "It's really quite alarming that people are still putting themselves at risk for a cancer that is readily preventable through early detection and safe sun protection habits".

The British Association of Dermatologists says skin cancer is becoming a major health concern in the UK and yet most people are not checking their skin regularly.

It is also warning of the link between the disease and sunburn, as 7 out of 10 people surveyed by the Association admit to have been burnt in the past year.
