Doreen Groom鈥檚 Story
Doreen, born in 1937, was at home with her disabled mother in Ely on VE Day.
Her father was serving in the army. She didn鈥檛 see him until January 1946.
On VE night there was a dance on the Market Square in Ely where everyone gathered. She felt happy that the war was over; there was relief there would be no more bombing.
Doreen鈥檚 mum got some red, white and blue ribbon and nailed 鈥榁E鈥 in ribbon to the front of the house.
Doreen now lives in her mother鈥檚 house.
