Piers Morgan says US president Barack Obama has 鈥渇lown the white flag鈥� after promising to 鈥済et action on guns鈥�.

It comes after nine people were shot dead by 21-year-old Dylan Roof at an African-American church in Charleston.

In an address days after the shooting, Obama said the US would 鈥渉ave to reckon with the fact that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries鈥�.

Former CNN presenter Morgan, a well-known advocate for US gun control, said the power of gun lobbyists had made politicians like Obama 鈥渃owardly鈥�.

鈥淸Obama] looked beaten up, worn down and defeated by the whole debate. He knows he鈥檚 achieved absolutely nothing,鈥� Morgan said.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a tragedy for American and the rest of the world. We want a great America鈥� but it鈥檚 like being in the Wild West half the time.鈥�
