A charity volunteer in Athens says 鈥渋t is very sad鈥� that so many children have been abandoned by their parents due to the financial crisis.

5live鈥檚 Anna Foster visited a hospital where rooms house up to 20 abandoned children at a time.

Irene, who works for the charity Diaconia, said that despite working with the children for over a year she still found the experience upsetting.

鈥淢any times we feel sad because we know why these children are here鈥� she said. 鈥滲ut when we are playing with them everything is ok.鈥�
