Eric Whitacre: Equus
Equus evolved into a piece of music that harnesses the energy of a running horse.
Eric Whitacre was working through redundant sound files on his computer one day in 1998, playing through each old musical idea he鈥檇 recorded and then deleting them one by one. Friend and fellow composer Steven Bryant was sitting in the next room, heard one and shouted: 鈥淢ark my words: if you don鈥檛 use that, I鈥檓 stealing it!鈥
Whitacre turned the idea into a wind ensemble piece as a commission for the University of Miami. In 2011 the composer then transcribed the original score from wind ensemble to full orchestra and chorus.
