Laura McAllister, the chair of Sport Wales, said the comment she made about Welsh rugby vs Welsh football was 鈥渄eliberately controversial鈥.

At the Hay Festival earlier this year, McAllister said that it would 鈥渄o more for Wales鈥 if the Welsh national football team qualify for France, than if the rugby team lift the World Cup next month.

She said she鈥檚 not 鈥渄owngrading the status of rugby鈥, but suggesting there should not be a 鈥渄estructive rivalry鈥 between the two sports.

McAllister also said that Wales should concentrate on other sports to 鈥渄iversify its global image鈥 and added that football is a 鈥渕ore widely played sport鈥 in Wales than rugby.
