Thai human trafficking investigator seeks asylum
The policeman who led an investigation into human trafficking in Thailand has fled the country for Australia. He said that he hoped to be given political asylum there. Paween Pongsirin was appointed to investigate trafficking networks after the discovery of mass graves at migrant camps earlier this year. He has been telling Newsday that he was threatened after discovering that members of the military, police and government were involved in people smuggling.
