The European Union rose from the destruction of World War Two. Its founders dreamed of a United States of Europe, spreading peace and prosperity over the continent.
Now that dream seems a remote prospect and three crises threaten the future of the EU. Economic uncertainty, the possibility of Britain voting to leave the union and a migrant crisis of biblical proportions.
In a special report for the Today programme, John Humphrys investigates whether the very existance of the EU is under threat.
