'Prosecution is a Deterrent' to Sexual War Crimes
Now remember the name Jean-Pierre Bemba: he's a former vice-president in the Democratic Republic of Congo and rebel leader who's now a convicted war criminal at the International Criminal Court. He was found responsible for atrocities carried out by his militia in the Central African Republic and of using rape as a weapon of war. Newsday got reaction from Zainab Bangura, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General on Sexual Violence in Conflict.
