Olive trees under threat
A disease called Xylella fastidiosa which is carried by insects and dries out the plants' leaves has already damaged thousands of olive trees in in southern Italy. An Italian tribunal had appealed an earlier European Union call for all potentially affected trees to be culled, but this week the EU court in Luxembourg rejected that appeal. The concern is that the infection could spread and devastate other historic and valuable olive groves in Europe. Gianni Cantele is the president of the farmers' union in the affected Puglia region. He told Newsday's Neil Gallagher about the dilemma they face.
