An expanded Panama Canal is now open for business
The newly-enlarged Panama Canal has opened to shipping, after an extensive expansion that took almost ten years to build. The expanded waterway allows much-larger generation of container ships to pass through the isthmus. Ilya Espino de Marotta, the chief engineer of the expansion programme, told Newsday why the canal had been transformed.
