Former England captain Terry Butcher says Wayne Rooney confused everyone by playing in midfield against Slovakia.

He believes manager Sam Allardyce needs to make sure England 鈥済et the best out of Wayne Rooney further up the pitch.鈥�

After Allardyce claimed it wasn't for him to tell Rooney where to play, Butcher told 5 live that 鈥渋t most definitely is."

England grinded out a 1-0 win against Slovakia on Sunday (3rd September) in Allardyce鈥檚 first game in charge, after Adam Lallana鈥檚 last-gasp winner. However, Butcher says it is unrealistic to expect too much of the new manager too soon:

鈥淗e鈥檚 not going to perform miracles, it's the same bunch of players."
