Terry Butcher: Rooney's England role ‘confusing’
Former England captain Terry Butcher says Wayne Rooney confused everyone by playing in midfield against Slovakia.
He believes manager Sam Allardyce needs to make sure England “get the best out of Wayne Rooney further up the pitch.”
After Allardyce claimed it wasn't for him to tell Rooney where to play, Butcher told 5 live that “it most definitely is."
England grinded out a 1-0 win against Slovakia on Sunday (3rd September) in Allardyce’s first game in charge, after Adam Lallana’s last-gasp winner. However, Butcher says it is unrealistic to expect too much of the new manager too soon:
“He’s not going to perform miracles, it's the same bunch of players."
