School children should be punished immediately for misbehaving with same-day detentions, according to the campaign group Parents and Teachers for Excellence.

Detentions would be handed out by senior management, meaning there are no questions about whether one teacher is "easier" to misbehave with. It is hoped this way students understand the consequences of their actions and teachers don't spend their spare time in detentions.

But Michelle Codrington, a secondary school teacher from Oxford, believes same-day detentions don't address the roots of problem behaviour. She told 5 live's Nicky Campbell: "When it comes to persistent behaviour, and it's the same students going to the same detentions every day after school, then actually you end up targetting the more vulnerable students."
