Are TV talent contests too unkind?

Gary Barlow has promised that his new 麻豆社 talent show won't be "negative".

On Saturday night the 麻豆社鈥檚 latest talent contest Let It Shine will be broadcast. Gary Barlow has promised that this show won鈥檛 have some of the more 鈥渘egative鈥� elements of other TV talent shows where contestants are humiliated and with cruel comments from the judges.

Richard Holloway is CEO of Fremantle media UK and executive producer of The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent and Julia Reaside is a Guardian TV critic. They discuss whether talent contests need a nasty judge after all.
