The man rumoured to be Donald Trump's choice for ambassador to the European Union has insisted the United States is not an enemy to the continent and called for a de-escalation in rhetoric.

Businessman and author Ted Malloch told Mark Mardell "I think some of the language suggesting that the United States is now an enemy of Europe is patently false and we need to de-escalate that rhetoric."
