Graham Gooch has revealed he told Alastair Cook to remain as England captain, following his decision to resign.

The 32-year-old Essex batsman led England for a record 59 Tests, including Ashes victories in 2013 and 2015, but has stepped down from the role following a 4-0 series defeat in India.

鈥淚 told him to stay,鈥� Gooch said.

鈥淗is sort of sportsman only comes along once in a generation, maybe even less.

鈥淗e鈥檚 a great man and he鈥檚 still got great things to do for his country,鈥� he added.
