Flower: Honesty and integrity made Cook a great captain

Former England head coach Andy Flower says Alastair Cook will be "very fondly loved and remembered" by the players he captained for his country.

The 32-year-old Essex batsman stepped down as Test skipper, a position he has held since the summer of 2012, on Monday.

Cook was appointed captain by Flower after Andrew Strauss' retirement and went on to lead England a record 59 times in Test matches, including two Ashes triumphs and series wins in India and South Africa.

"I always thought he would make an excellent captain because of his honesty, integrity and drive," said Flower. "He's quite a gentle guy but there's an inner steel about him which stood him in good stead over the years".
