Homeland and Supergirl star David Harewood had said would be interested in replacing Peter Capaldi as the next Doctor Who.

Harewood, who has been linked to the role following Capaldi's announcement that he will be leaving the role at the end of the year, said it was "nice to be in the running".

"I'm already playing an alien [in Supergirl] so maybe I could switch to playing a Time Lord?," he told 5 live's Colin Paterson as the Independent Spirit Awards in Los Angeles.

"It needs to do something different, so I think it's either going to be a black person or a woman. It would just bring a different flavour to it."
