Monye: Gatland should pick Lions ‘tour captain’
Former British and Irish Lions winger Ugo Monye says coach Warren Gatland should consider appointing a ‘tour captain’ before deciding on a skipper to lead the Test team for the series against New Zealand.
Wales forward Alun Wyn Jones is one player who has been earmarked as a potential skipper, but Monye says with no player yet guaranteed a place in the starting XV, Gatland should bide his time.
“If I was Warren Gatland I’d pick a tour captain,” he said.
“You’ve seven weeks out there and four weeks before you play a Test match.
“I’d pick someone with the experience of Alun Wyn Jones, I think Owen Farrell’s name comes into it, Rory Best and Dylan Hartley.
“You might emerge as leader on that tour and when you get to the Test matches, then pick your Test captain,” Monye added.
