A desperate mother has described her year-long journey to get help for her severely autistic teenager, who was being kept in a residential psychiatric unit.

Isabelle Garnett called Adrian Chiles a year ago while listening to his programme, 5 live Daily. She was at the end of her tether because of the place where her son, Matthew, was being treated.

That started a battle to get him moved to the right place 鈥� and he鈥檚 now in a supported living centre with specialist care provided by autism experts.

"Matthew's progress in the last couple of months has exceeded our hope for him鈥�, she told Adrian in an update on Matthew鈥檚 condition. 鈥淗e's recovering at an incredible rate and that's thanks to the autism specific care."
