Is May's timing opportunistic?
Conservative MP Michael Gove has said he is confident the prime minister will secure a majority in the general election. He praised Theresa May's decision to hold the snap election, arguing it would strengthen her Brexit mandate.
Mr Gove said opinion had hardened in favour of leaving the European Union and the election would infuse Westminster with "democratic energy" to exit the European Union.
But former adviser to Ed Miliband, Lord Stewart Wood, said the timing of the election seemed "opportunistic".
