5-year-old Oldham Athletic fan Thomas Young heard his side's goalkeeper Connor Ripley was about to head back to Middlesbrough at the end of his loan spell.

He wrote to the club and offered to take his place - only for the chairman Simon Corney to write back to invite him to come and try out in goal before their game against Rochdale.

Matthew, Thomas' father, speaking after the game said: "It's one of those occasions that you just never forgot as long as you're alive."

Looking back on the game, Thomas said: "It was fabulous."
