Hong Kong and China: One country, two systems
Hong Kong was handed back to China 20 years ago. Is one country, two systems working?
The British colony of Hong Kong was handed back to China in 1997.
When China took control of Hong Kong, it promised the "one country, two systems" formula would guarantee the island a high degree of autonomy but twenty years on, many residents increasingly fear China is interfering in the city's affairs.
The Chinese Ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming tells John Humphrys that they are following the formula. His Excellency says you shouldn't just focus on "discontented people and their complaints".
Former Hong Kong Chief Secretary Anson Chan says the "one country, two systems" formula is being "seriously eroded" adding that "we have seen successive interpretation of the basic law that strikes at the very heart of judicial independence".
