Green: 'We need to maintain the downward pressure on the deficit'

First Secretary of State Damian Green says 'we need the stability in the economy.'

Damian Green, First Secretary of State, tells the Today programme on the current public sector pay cap: "Clearly what we need to do is to be fair to the public sector workers and fair to the taxpayers."

He adds: "If you just let public spending rip, then what you get is a massive debt which is unfair to future generations."

He also pointed to the coming report on workers' rights from former Labour adviser Matthew Taylor "as a very good symbol of cross-party working in the national interest".
