Anti-inflammatory drugs could cut the risk of heart attacks and strokes, a study of 10,000 patients suggests.

Rather than the traditional statins to lower cholesterol, the drug canakinumab is an anti-inflammatory, reducing the risk associated with the body's own response to a heart attack.

Dr Aseem Malhotra is a consultant cardiologist at the Lister Hospital, Stevenage and author of Pioppi Diet, a book that gives advice on how to reduce the risk of heart disease.

He told the World at One we should "take these results with a big pinch of salt" and that there are "alternatives to taking medications" such as lifestyle changes.
