Lord Adonis has branded the row over university tuition fees "a mess". The Labour peer, who helped to design the tuition fee system, said the government had passed the cost of teaching onto students and that needed to stop.

He called for a reduction "across the board" on fees from the current levels of more than 拢9,000 a year for many courses.
