Labour to decide on inclusion of trans women in all-female shortlist

The Labour Party is to decide if all-female shortlists should include trans women

The Labour Party has a tricky decision to make. Should it tweak its rules to allow transgender women who self-identify as women but have not physically undergone any changes to their bodies, to be included in all-female shortlists.

The ruling NEC might make its decision later this week, although there is a suggestion that it might be shelved till after the local elections in May.

Emily Brothers was the first openly transgender Labour Party candidate to run for Westminster. She ran unsuccessfully for the Sutton and Cheam constituency in the 2015 General Election and Lucy Masoud is Labour Party member, trade unionist and LGBT London representative for the Fire Brigades Union. They debated the issue with Justin Webb.
