In the 1950s, West Side Story, a musical based on gang wars mixed with Shakespeare, was a revolutionary idea. Its composer Leonard Bernstein was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th Century. This year, the centenary of his birth will be marked with a special series of performances at the Proms.
