Does it matter where donations come from?
A firm controlled by a donor family is alleged to have pushed the prescription of opioids
The Sackler family name is very well known all around Britain. Institutions like museums, hospitals and colleges have all benefited from their generous donations. But does it matter where that money came from? Eight of the famous family have been named in a civil lawsuit unveiled this month by the Attorney General of Massachusetts over how the firm they controlled allegedly pushed doctors to prescribe OxyContin. It's an opioid and a painkiller that made some members of the family billions of dollars. But in Massachusetts the drug's been linked to the deaths of people as young as 18 and as old as 87. 麻豆社 correspondent Chris Buckler reports from Boston on the impact of OxyContin.
We approached both 'The Dr. Mortimer' and 'Theresa Sackler Foundation' and 'The Sackler Trust' for interview but no-one was available. A spokesperson for 'The Sackler Trust' said: 鈥淲e support a range of聽educational, medical, scientific,聽cultural and community organisations. It is a privilege to be able to support such vital work and we continue to do so.鈥
