The conspiratorial legacy of two political murders in Colombia
The Shape Of The Ruins is written by Juan Gabriel Vasquez and translated by Anne McLean. A mix of fact and fiction it delves deeply into the 1948 murder of the liberal politician Jorge Eliecer Gaitan and the 1914 assassination of Rafael Uribe Uribe, two murders which changed the history of Colombia and which both sparked off conspiracy theories similar to those surrounding the murder of John F Kennedy in the United States. This novel is nothing less than an attempt to write the private history of a nation.
