Shostakovich鈥檚 12th symphony 鈥 鈥楾he Year 1917鈥 - is a programmatic work in that it tries to describe an event, in this case the Russian Revolution, with music rather than words. Its four movements are played without a break, and with its use of Russian folk and revolutionary songs, and a triumphal feel of the last movement, it鈥檚 a work typical of Shostakovich's symphonic output.
