Composed in 1912, the 'Piano Sonata No. 2' was originally intended to be a simple piece but once Prokofiev had finished with it, it ended up as a more complex sonata. This piece shows just how skilful his piano composition was and perhaps why the piano is central to so many of his works. Listen for the way it begins; a pleasing tune that is suddenly gate-crashed by jarring chaos and quickly blends effortlessly back to something more melodic - right from the start this is Prokofiev telling you he means business.
