John Hume, the former SDLP leader has died. He won the Nobel Peace Prize together with Lord Trimble for his role in the Northern Ireland peace process.
Tony Blair was Prime Minister when the Good Friday agreement was signed in 1988.
He tells Radio 4's World at One that Mr Hume became a close confidante - "He was respected throughout Europe, people went to him for political advice about the Northern Ireland peace process, but as I got to know him better, I would discuss a range of political issues with him".
