Lili Boulanger was a French composer and sister to teacher and conductor, Nadia Boulanger. The first woman to ever win the prestigious Prix de Rome prize at just 19 years old, Lili Boulanger’s musical career was cut short by her untimely death at the age of 24 in 1918.

‘D'un matin de printemps’ (On a Spring Morning) and ‘D'un soir triste’ (On a Melancholy Evening) are companion pieces and the last known compositions of Lili Boulanger. ‘D’un soir triste’ is dark and brooding, perhaps an appropriate composition for someone on their death bed. ‘D'un matin de printemps’, however, is in complete contrast – charming, soaring and evoking the springtime.
