Classics with NOW: Haydn, Te Deum in C major
Dedicated to Empress Marie Therese, the wife of Franz I of Austria, this piece was Haydn鈥檚 second setting of the Te Deum, a latin hymn of praise.
Interestingly, this piece features no solo sections, which we usually hear in Haydn鈥檚 later works. Haydn makes use of the chorus throughout the work鈥檚 three movements, treating the work effectively like a concerto for chorus and orchestra.
The uplifting opening Allegro features a theme sung in unsion by the chorus, and the key of C major reflects the worshipful text. The Adagio is more mysterious, with sections in C minor and chromatic harmonies before the final Allegro returns to the brighter mood of the first section.
This performance by 麻豆社 NOW and 麻豆社 NCW took place at the 麻豆社 Proms 2015 in the Royal Albert Hall, with conductor Thomas S酶nderg氓rd.
