As economy falters, entrepreneurial women build backyard industries in Zimbabwe
The boom in homemade goods has been bolstered by a 2016 law that prohibited the import of certain items to encourage residents to purchase locally. Statistics from the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development in Zimbabwe show that about 261,000 women are involved in self-assisted projects such as producing soap, soft drinks, candles, peanut butter and perfumes. There has been a growing demand for these homemade consumable products, which are a cheaper alternative to imported products
