The Danish footballer Christian Eriksen will be fitted with an ICD heart-starting device following his cardiac arrest during the match with Finland at Euro 2020. An ICD is a device for people with abnormal hearth rhythms, which sends pulses to regulate these, especially those that could cause a cardiac arrest. If these are detected, it can deliver low-voltage electrical impulses to correct a heart rhythm, or a larger electric shock to restore a normal rhythm.

Abi-Gaye Smythe is from Jamaica and had an ICD fitted ten years ago. She explains the benefits of having the ICD fitted. She says she recognised the signs of a cardiac arrest when she saw Eriksen collapse and guessed he would be fitted with an ICD.
