Contributor:
Professor Alvin Jackson
Talk Title:
Rethinking unionism and partition, 1900-1921
Talk Synopsis:
This talk explores how the partition of Ireland was 鈥榓n evolving set of events, rather than a single act.鈥 It describes the 鈥榣ong-term drift within Irish unionist politics鈥 towards a local, northern predominance鈥. And it looks at how partition changed from being a 鈥榯actical ploy鈥 for unionists to a 鈥榥egotiating goal鈥 and how what had been intended as a 鈥榮oft border between different parts of the British imperial world was鈥 displaced by a newly minted international frontier.鈥 It suggests that partition 鈥榰nderlines the operation of the law of unintended consequences in Irish politics鈥 and explains how it led to the division of Ireland and its people and also 鈥榯he division of unionism itself.鈥
