The Partition of Ireland: Causes and Consequences
Contributor:
Professor Jennifer Todd
Talk Title:
Community, church and culture in boundary-making
Talk Synopsis:
This talk explores how partition 鈥榗rystallised communities, empowered churches [and] slowed the process of cultural change鈥 on both sides of the border. It describes the 鈥榗omplex cultural mosaic鈥 that existed before partition and how much of this complexity was 鈥榯ransformed鈥︹榠nto a sharp territorial line鈥 that 鈥榯urned the cultural mosaic into solidary communities divided one from another on religious, national and political lines鈥. It suggests that 鈥榰nionist and nationalist ideas and values were further simplified鈥 in the post-partition period and that whilst there were 鈥榓reas of permeability in each society鈥, these 鈥榙id not change the divisions鈥 and that the 鈥榥ew political systems stably reproduced ethno-religious divisions鈥 in ways that were 鈥榥ot seriously shaken until after the second world war.鈥 It also looks at social, economic and political change across the last 100yrs, including the recent effects of Brexit and suggests that a key legacy of partition has been 鈥榓 failure of each to understand the other.鈥
