Talk Title:
Life on the line: Partition at the Border
Talk Synopsis:
This talk explores how Partition affected the everyday life of border communities. It describes the 鈥榩iecemeal and鈥 protracted鈥 process by which the new boundary was established and how 鈥榠t ruptured old connections鈥 but still needed to be crossed.鈥 It looks at the extent of smuggling and the development of a 鈥榝rontier bureaucracy鈥 and also how the Irish border continued 鈥榯o be stalked by the very violence of which it was itself a product.鈥 It suggests that 鈥榯he pain and irritation and鈥 fury of partition seemed to grow a little dimmer鈥 by the end of the twentieth century and that by 鈥榯he start of this millennium the border was more permeable than at any point since 1922.鈥 And it concludes with an assessment of Brexit鈥檚 impact on the Irish border, noting that whilst it remains one of 鈥榯he many divisive and contested legacies鈥 of Partition, it 鈥榗ontinues to be characterised by interconnection and exchange.鈥
