A series from South Korea has become a global hit since launching on Netflix. In Squid Game, a group of 456 people in debt and down on their luck are lured into a bloodthirsty survival game where they have the chance to walk away with 45.6 billion Korean won ($39 million).

Lee Jae-Lim, a journalist for the Korea Joon-ang Daily newspaper based in Seoul, explains the game's appeal.

"It's a children's game turned into a death match."
