Has the portrayal of Latinos improved in Hollywood since the 1961 West Side Story?
One criticism leveled at the 1961 West Side Story - a much-loved classic - was that it reinforced negative stereotypes about Puerto Ricans - and to the chagrin of the film’s detractors many of the Puerto Rican characters in the movie were played by white actors. Steven Spielberg’s new re-working of the musical - just released in cinemas - made a big effort to bring more authentic representations of Latinos to the big screen as Talking Movies’ Emma Jones reports.
