Russian forces advance on Kyiv

As Ukraine braces itself as Russian forces reach its capital, we consider the global economic effects.

As Ukraine braces itself as Russian forces reach its capital, we consider the global economic effects. Kyiv is seeing exchanges of fire in the north, as Russian troops advance. We hear from a woman seeking a safe haven with her family, as well as Ukrainian businessman Oleg Chernyak of CHI Software, who has recently left his home in Kharkiv, close to the Russian border. Ukraine鈥檚 President Zelensky has called on the European Union to impose harsher sanctions on Russia. However, there has been a perceived reluctance from some European countries including Germany. One key issue is whether to disrupt Russia鈥檚 access to the SWIFT global banking network. Investment analyst Justin Urquhat Stewart explains what the SWIFT system is and how it works. Meanwhile, Dieter Janecek, a Green party MP in the German coalition government, discusses whether the country can wean itself off its reliance on Russian gas, and the implications of imposing sanctions. China鈥檚 economic and political relationship with Russia is playing into the calculations, and author and Russia expert Peter Conradi explains how. Plus, we hear from the 麻豆社鈥檚 Will Bain, on the news that Russia has been stripped of the Champions League final by the European football governing body UEFA.
