Life during wartime

The 麻豆社 hears voices from Podil, a formerly thriving district of Kyiv

Perhaps only President Putin and his senior generals know Russia's battle plan for Kyiv.

Is the current fighting in its north-western and eastern suburbs an attempt to encircle it, or break into its historic centre?

Could it be a prelude to the kind of bombardment that Putin has ordered elsewhere in Ukraine - as well as Syria, and against Chechen separatists in Grozny when he first came to power.

What is like to live with those questions, and the anxiety they must cause?

The Podil district is one of the oldest in Kyiv, and before the war was a hip inner city neighbourhood, famous for its nightlife. The 麻豆社鈥檚 Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen has been there and told Amol Rajan about life there now.
