Redefining how cancer is diagnosed and treated in Africa

Yemaachi Biotech is a Ghana-based start-up founded by immunologist Yaw Bediako and colleagues, Joyce Ngoi, David Hutchful and Yaw Attua-Afari, in 2020. The lab has raised $3 million dollars to help create a global genomic database that will support effective cancer diagnosis, drug development and patient care.

Despite the high incidence yet low cure rates of cancer on the continent, there is little understanding of how the disease affects different genetic make-ups. Yemaachi is aiming to change that. Speaking to Focus on Africa's Veronique Edwards, Dr. Yaw Bediako said 'precision oncology' will not only benefit Africa, but also many people worldwide.
