Trump Organization found guilty in tax fraud case
Lawyer says charges could make Donald Trump鈥檚 run for presidency in 2024 鈥榮tronger鈥 because people will feel he has been 鈥榰nfairly targeted鈥
A court in New York has convicted former US President Donald Trump鈥檚 property business of tax fraud and other financial crimes. The Trump Organisation, which owns hotels, golf courses and other real estate worldwide, was found guilty on all 17 charges including conspiracy, falsifying records and running a year鈥檚-long tax-dodging scheme for executives.
Neither Mr Trump nor his family were charged in the case, which he has called politically motivated.
Paul Kamenar is counsel to the National Legal and Policy Center, a conservative watchdog group in Washington. He told Newsday: 鈥淯nder United States law this kind of tax violation is very small potatoes. Normally our prosecutors would handle this in a civil type of context not a criminal context.鈥
Mr Kamenar does not believe the charges against the Trump Organization will impact Mr Trump鈥檚 bid for the presidency in 2024. He said: 鈥淚t might make him stronger because they will feel perhaps that he was being鈥nfairly targeted.鈥
