Scientists announce 'very big milestone' in nuclear fusion
Physicists have pursued the technology for decades as it promises a potential source of near-limitless clean energy.
In a major breakthrough, US scientists say they have recreated nuclear fusion.
Physicists have pursued the technology for decades as it promises a potential source of near-limitless clean energy.
On Tuesday, researchers announced they have overcome a major barrier, confirming that they have produced more energy from a fusion experiment compared to the energy that was put in.
According to the scientists, the technology could be used as a revolutionary alternative power source in the future.
However, they say there is still some way to go before fusion energy is used to powers homes.
Andrew MacKinnon is a scientist who was part of the major breakthrough, he is the leader of the High Energy Density Science and Technology organization at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
He told Newsday, "Fusion has the capability of providing carbon free clean energy", and "that produces energy which you can then extract, and use to drive a power station in the future".
